Too late to start chinese martial arts?

I'm 17, and a teacher told me that in china they start from the day they can walk, and that I shouldn't waste my time because I will never be as good as the Chinese. Can I catch up in skill? (I'm 17), very athletic. Thank you so much for reading and the response.

1. It is never too late to start martial arts. ...and that is a very wrong thing for a teacher to say about you as a potential student. I would find another teacher with a better attitude.
2. i started at 18 in the military.............. im damn good, whether im better than chinese? i never had to compete in any tourneys with them
