I want to study a Martial Art in either China or Japan. How do I go about looking into this?

Hi! Basically, I would like to go to China/Japan for a few months and dedicate my time to Martial Arts. I have seen a few Kung Fu training academys in China on the net, but I don't know how reputable they are. Has anyone ever been to or know of anything like this? Where you pay to study Martial Arts 24/7?? Thank you in advance!

  1. Japanese and Chinese martial arts were originally designed as artistic impression or dance and later moved to becomming a physical exercise for health and then an excercise for spiritual growth and balance. It wasn't until the early part of the twenteth century that it became used as a fighting tool. Korean martial arts (karate)was developed as an original fighting method used to ward off imperial soldiers by use of open hand methods without weapons. Later weapons were incorporated. I've found the later martial arts, Korean, Brasilian, Tiawanese, are far superior in methods used for self defense. Older martial arts, Japanese, Chinese, are better suited for spirual growth, balance, and thought processes. Some of the greatest teachers are here in the USA. Just "google" the keywords "martial arts schools" and find one near you. Good luck with your new adventure. You will be pleased with the outcome.
  2. mjaple- It's not true...they were not invented for artistic reasons. And, karate is japanese, tae kwon do is korean. Anyway, I don't know about japanese martial arts, but in the Shaolin Temple they don't allow woman to train, not even go in. That's what my chinese friends have told me. But, in the schools around the area women are allowed. I love martial arts as well, especially kung fu. The traditional karate is ok too. I have a friend, but he lives in Mexico, who has done training in the Shaolin temple. I think he even became a monk. I can give you his e-mail address, maybe he can help you out. Let me just ask him for his permission to give you his e-mail addy. Meanwhile e-mail me at: sinatex_mx@yahoo.com I also happen to work at a chinese company (in Mexico), I might found out with my chinese co-workers. Sorry, I don't think I even answered your question. But, good luck on your quest. Hey, I asked my friend and he said ok he will give you more info. E-mail me and I'll give you his address :)
  3. Stephanie, if you really are that dedicated you don't have to go just yet, get the feel of things first in the UK. My friend is one of the highest ranked masters of Bagua zhang and has studied in china for TWENTY YEARS. If you are unsure about form or self discipline it would be crazy to step in to something until you know it's exactly what you want. Alex Kozma is a master in quite a few very devastatingly good arts and has written books on his travels and is re-noun worldwide for his teachings. I knew him before he went and now he is a Don. His most famous book is "The way of the esoteric warrior" and there is not alot he doesn't know about the best ways to teach and learn mind body and spirit. At the moment you only have 4 elemental signs Earth Fire Water Air, the Chinese have the void as well, this represents you and what you don't know yet, fill it wisely, be aware. Alex runs the UK (Bagua) Nei jia institute (it has got a good web site WITH THE SAME NAME) and has masters who teach under him, contact him and express your concerns. His phone number is 0207 386 7122 and does tutor privately for the dedicated . I am sure he will help you find your way, good luck Q.
