What is (or are) the primary martial arts styles that come from or are practiced in Thailand.? If you happened to catch the Miss Universe Pageant broadcast on worldwide television last night live from Viet Nam, you may have seen that the Winner of the National Costume competition came from Thailand. The contestant --Gavintra Photijak -- struck a menacing martial arts pose for her publicity stills, as well as when she first posed for the broadcast cameras in the opening parade of contestants. She was definately very eye-catching and different. See her picture here: http://www.missuniverse.com/mainevent/costume.html The history behind the development and spread of various martial arts styles and forms across the Orient and indeed, the world, is rich and varied. Tae Kwon Do comes from Korea (correct me if I am wrong). My style of Karate (Shotokan) comes from Japan. But what is the style of martial arts that comes from Thailand, and was it first developed in a neighboring country? Or was it totally the brain child of some Thai Master from centuries past?
living / learning martial arts abroad for police work? Hi there, I have been saving for quite some time to go to asia and learn martial arts for at least a year. I am posting this on both yahoo answers, travellers point and a martial arts website to get a varied response. I will have enough money to go to any asian country and learn martial arts for at least 1 year. I want to live there and become competent in an art so that i am prepared for police work when i return home. I also want to enjoy myself and have fun. I originally wanted to go to china and learn kung fu, but i know that this would probably be quite an unsociable environment considering i like to travel, play guitar and perform poi etc. In other words i want to go somewhere that i can meet other fun young people. I would not be able to teach english or work in the schools i have found in china though which would suggest quite an antisocial lifestyle and no means of making money. Then i thought about going to the Phillipines and learning Eskrima. This is quite popular with me as i have always wanted to go to the phillipines and i love the idea of living on a selection of islands with beaches nearby. I could teach english there (although not make much money) and i think it would be quite socialble with travellers coming and going. The down side to this is that eskrima is not necessarily an art that i am very keen on or feel i could put to use in policing. Then another idea is to go to Thailand and learn muay thai. I have travelled around Thailand before and know from experience that the Thai people are amazing and that there is a large amount of young travellers that id get to know. I also know of training centres on the beaches and islands (which i would like to travel around) and would really really like to teach english to children. I could do all this here and it is probably the cheapest option as well. The biggest problem is that the art isnt really defensive at all and therefore wouldnt really benefit me with my future career. I am basically asking advise from anyone who has an opinion to help me out. Any suggestions are welcome and any feedback whatsoever is greatly appreciated. My main criteria is - learn a defensive martial art for use in a future role in the Police - to have a good social life as i will be there a year, with other young people (and maybe some attractive young ladies) - to teach english to children as i love children and think id really enjoy it - live not too far from civilization.... i want to travel while im out there and do a tour of south east asia when i finish Thankyou very much Nick
Martial Arts/Academies in Japan? I'm from England, and I'm in my Gap Year. I have 5 months to see the world. I've already done all of Europe, and most of the USA. I've been enthralled with Martial Arts my entire life, but want to take it one step further and practise them in their origin. I've considered Thailand and China, but I would really prefer Japan. Is there any way to intensively study martial arts in Japan as a foreigner that speaks little Japanese? Preferably in an affordable way?
Is there a martial art that could be considered "American"? I've always wondered that. Brazil has BJJ and Capoeria, the UK has catch wrestling and Queensbury boxing, France has Savate, China has wushu, Isreal has krav maga, Korea has TKD and Hapkido, Japan has Karate, Judo and many other arts, Thailand has Muay Thai, and Indonesia has Penjak. However, for a country that's 230 years old and has had much conflict in its history, there seems to be no martial art that could be considered truly "American". The 2 arts that could probably be considered the closest to being considered American martial arts would be "Dirty Fighting" (Which are simply banned Queensbury boxing rules and a few rudimentry wrestling moves combined) and American Kempo, which has a philosiphy that is American, but it's hardly a widespread art in this country as TKD is in Korea and BJJ and Capoeria is in Brazil. If I'm sounding ignorant about other fighting styles that are taking root in the USA, please correct me. Thank you :) http://www.martialtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28561&page=3 How to disarm "Pistol-Fu".
Muay Thai is not first Kickboxing Martial Arts? Muay Thai is not first kickboxing martial art Bokator Khmer kickboxing from cambodia is the predecessor of Muay Thai and Muay Boran (ancient muay thai style ). Pradal Serey is modern day Bokator in cambodia. Bokator is an ancient martial art that has been around 800 to 1000 years before thailand was even a country. (note: thailand became thailand around 1400 ad ). Cambodia, or at least the empire has been around since 200 ad. The Thai's borrowed Cambodian language, clothes, music, and why wouldnt they borrow the martial art? This already known as a fact that they borrowed this from the cambodians ( the cambodians were influenced by India). Dont believe? type it in yahoo or google and read about it. type "bokator" or "pradal serey" and read about it. All these Thai fighters from Thailand such as Baukaw (k-1 muay thai champion) and Tony Jaa( the thai movie star) are from Surin, Thailand. Surin, Thailand has a MAJORITY of ethnic cambodians living there. 70 percent of them still speak
Why does Thailand have so much of Indian influences? For instance the food, the clothing, the bright colors, the religion, the martial arts. I'm more interested with the history of how this happened. Very fascinated by both cultures and want to understand the relation. If anyone can explain it would be great. Thank you!

if bruce lee didnt teach non asian the chinese martial art? what happen if he didnt? well, the non asian, i prefer the western people will lose to asian people easily in an mma bout.yes, without the jeet kun do,kung fu, karate, taekwondo, judo, and muay thai(Thailand is asian) and the brazilian jujitsu(original place for jiujitsu is japan)the western ppl will never beat asian ppl in mma fight.the only martial art that originally from west is wrestling and boxing.and the two is not enough to beat the martial arts from asia.so what happen if the asian didnt want to teach the western ppl the asian martial art??
Muay Thai & Teaching English (TEFL) in Thailand? Ive been saving money to go and train muay thai and live in thailand for a year. I have some basic martial arts experience but not any muay thai - and would like some advice. My rough plan at the moment is to go & get a TEFL so im not burning all my savings and teach part time - evenings etc. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions about the mix between teaching and training? What kind of TEFL is best? I would start by going to the southern islands where i can get in touch with the basics of muay thai- any suggestions where a good place to learn is? I was then thinking of training at Muay Thai Sangka (www.ancientmuaythai.com) and teaching at the same time. Can anyone tell me what it is like to mix teaching & training while still being able to go out and have other hobbies like playing guitar etc?The hardest thing for me will be the transition from spending the day in the office to training all day. Im trying to lift some weights and go running each day but any other advice? Thanks

Which country would you be most likely to visit next summer? Anyone can answer, but I am curious about Martial Art studies. The top countries that I can think of are: Thailand- Muay Thai Philippines- Arnis-Escrima-Kali Brazil- Brazilian Jujitsu, Capoeira Hong Kong- Kung Fu, Tai Chi Japan-a) Okinawa- Karate or b) Kyoto/Tokyo- Judo This question is mostly just for fun. Whomever gives the best where and why, gets the 11 points. A visual aid for those who might have less than adequate knowledge of the Philippines in particular, SE Asia in general.. http://www.wowphilippines.com.tw/english/leisure/beach.html I am learning a lot about some of the characters on here from these answers. All I can say is, "Interesting".

Is it normal to feel this way as a parent? i have 2 sons and 2 daughters. the oldest boy is 17. my youngest son is 14. Scott (17) has been practicing mix martial arts such as muay thai, wrestling, etc since 5. Scott's 1st match was at age 13. he trains very hard and is very good. he spent a few months in thailand sharpening his muay thai skills. i've seen him knock out, choke out, and submit his opponents.BASICALLY: HE'S DANGEROUSLY GOOD. Lex (14) has been practicing for 3 months or so and is having his 1s match against his brother. who is more skillful, has way more experience, and more aggressive. my wife and i let them join this sport because it teaches them how to defend themselves and others. I Feel Sad for Lex now. even thought he also trained but he's just not ready yet for a fighter like his brother. Scott is like a wild ruthless animal when he's in a ring. i've seen him broke another opponent's arm using a submission hold. he fractured another opponent's ankle. broke opponents nose&rib. their match is tonight.
I think I freaked him out...how to remedy? I've been with my guy for about a year now. We don't live together, but he brought up the idea a few months ago, and we are waiting for me lease to be up. I have thought lately that he has been leaning towards the marriage/commitment thing, because of his words/actions. He says he loves me very much. I think I may have responded to this a little TOO enthusiastically, and now I think he's freaking out. He is withdrawing a little, and showing some erratic behavior - bought a ticket to Thailand to study martial arts for 2 weeks, talking about possibly buying a house by himself (oh, but he wants me to live in it with him -NOT on the mortgage?). Some days, he will be all, "I love you, I'm so happy", and some days, he will act more like I'm his buddy. I am confused, and I think he's scared of commiting to me. He'll talk about OUR future, etc., but then act like he wants to slow things down...I don't get it. How can I address this? I think he's a little goosed... Example - I was talking about buying a new couch - he said to wait, and we'll buy one together for the new place. At the same time, some days he will withdraw from me, and want to spend the night alone. He says that he wants to be with me forever, if he can be with anyone forever - what the hell? I guess I just need to know what's going on in his head, and how I should behave about this. If it matters, I'm 24, he's 27, and neither have been married before. No kids. We both have good jobs, are stable, etc. - in other words, marriage is not a ridiculous proposition.

I think the person who accused Jak Othman a faker has never met kru Jak and trained under him. What do u think? I've trained under kru Jak, and he still practices the traditional muay thai techniques and as he said, muay thai is the foundation of what he's teaching at his kickboxing/martial art studio. He's not a faker, he's REAL!!If you think he's a faker, prove it. Can you?Btw, according to Thai's tradition if a student from one Thai school insulted another Thai school's instructor, they should be beheaded or kicked out from his training centre. What do you think? Should we do that to those who insulted a Muay Thai instructor, kru or ajarn outside Thailand? (kick out that is...)
For a Muay Thai Class, Does This Sound Good? Hello, I have been looking for a Muay Thai class to take in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. After searching without success, I was introduced to Jak Othman on Martial Arts Planet.com. A Muay Thai instructor here. This is Jak Othman's website, please give me any of your opinion: http://www.jakickboxing.com/intro.html Or is Thailand the only way?
foot volleyball? i saw a clip the other day of a game that was very similar to volleyball however it was played only with your feet. same rules as volleyball as far as three hits boundaries etc... however the net was like 6ft high and to spike the players kicked the ball with a bicycle kick and the ball could be blocked with an opposing bicycle kick type thing. the ball was made of wicker and the game is prevalent in countries that practice martial arts. for instance the match i saw was between malaysia and thailand. i think this game is call baku or something, i just can't remember exactly the name. i would like to find out some more information about this sport so if you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated! thanks so much for your time. :)
Frank Castle VS John Rambo? Who would win a battle between these two? John Rambo is a Vietnam War veteran, Green Beret and is greatly skilled in all aspects of survival, weaponry, hand-to-hand combat and guerrilla warfare. Frank Castle (The Punisher) is also a Vietnam War veteran, ex special ops for the F.B.I., a master of martial arts, stealth tactics, hand-to-hand combat, and a wide variety of weapons. They are both known for their brutal nature and willingness to kill. If John Rambo was stationed in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and Frank Castle was stationed in Bangkok, Thailand, and were both givin orders to kill the other, and were both givin exactly one month to prepare, who would come out the victor?
