for people who have studied martial arts in china? i am going to leave for china in 40 days to study chinese for a year at wuhan university. I thought if i was going to china what better place to try learning martial arts. Is this sort of thing possible for people who don't plan to devote thier lives to martial arts etc? From what i see the options are total devotion or not at all. I just thought it would be fun to learn. Is that just not done?
China and martial arts? I saw on tv scenes of a city in China that is dedicated to the study of martial arts. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people practice at the same time. It looks beautiful. Does anybody know the name of the city?
Anyone martial arts train in China? I've heard the Shaolin Temple is run down, and I've heard it's the best place to train. Has anyone been there recently? Would it be better to find a private teacher/school? Would it matter to anyone over there that I''m a girl? Any tips from people who have done it would help a lot.
Work / Martial Arts in China? Hello- I am an American with questions regarding work and martial arts in China. I greatly desire to relocate to asia and study martial arts with every ounce of free time I find available. I was curious what kind of employment opportunities I could find in China as well as the odds of getting trained by a good master considering I am a westerner. The ideal goal would be no work and just train but I don't think that will pay for food and what not :) Thanks for any responses.
in Uk you practize martial arts like wing tsun?do you know? it's a china martial art...the legend says that a woman find the style..we use only the flexibility against men who are more strong than women.... i pratized this art for 6 years..one of these days i wish i began to practize it... bye bye from Italy!!! thank you CD..do you PRACTISE anything? :)
All of the tea in China is wrapped up in the martial arts, would you martial artist agree? The question properly phrased would read: "If China's last three emperors made the above statement that all of the tea in China is wrapped up in the martial arts, would you martial artist agree with them?" Also, what style do you do and for how long? You may add your credentials and club affiliation with your answer to this question stated immediately above. Also read the following two links: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/historyofmartialartsinhawaii/message/1459 http://www.myspace.com/centerkingdom . THIS QUESTION IS FOR ALL OF THE TEA IN CHINA! So, do you expert martial artist of many styles care to answer this question? Provide thoughts or comments? .
Should I compete in martial arts tournaments again? I semi retired in 2000 aged 27 after 11 years of competing. I felt I retired too young, but did so because I suffered a brain aneurysm that year. I also stopped tarining at the karate club I had been at since 1992, returning briefly in 2003 only to find I had been stripped of my grades and had to start from scratch. This was not acceptable to me, I was unhappy about it. I then trained in other martial arts and trained also in China and Japan with real masters. It was a privelege for me to do so. Recently I was contacted by promoters of an all styles tournament, asking me if I would like to participate. I would like tom having had the all clear from the hospital this year, but as I now teach martial arts (since 2007) , it is years since I sparred with anyone here and my students are beginner level. I am interested, but don't want to be humilated. And yet for my level I would be expected to enter at black belt and above level. So is it foolish for me to do this? The interesting thing about teh brain trauma is the doctors told me it was not caused by any blows to the head - as a successful competitor at teh time I cannot even remember anyone landing a single blow to the head. They said it was stress related. I gues sthe fire never goes out of you, though I feel I am more mature than the arrogant 27 year old I was then. I would like to know if the skills I have learned in tai chi (combative sense) and wing chun could be successful for me as the wado and shotokan styles were for me in karate competition. I just think I can improve by competing again. I miss it!
Would you list down the martial arts of each country for me, please? Not the different styles of martial arts of a coutry, you know, like Japan has different style of Karate and China has many styles of Kung Fu. Just the martial art. Please and thank you! I just want to see the background of the country through the list you'll hopefully post. So, that I'll know if the country is gritty, and dangerous or is it full of rich people. Because somehow, the more violent a country is, the more violent their martial art is. Like the Krav Maga of Israel.
Does any one know a good collection of Martial Art legends form China and Asia? I want to write a book or screen play about a Kung-Fu warrior traveling ancient China and perfecting his martial arts ability to mastery. He challenges the monks of Shaolin , the Taoist monks in Wu Tan mountains and all over the country. I wnat him to use a staff and his fist and kicks. He will be bald and have fu manchu and wear a brown and white or faded balck and cream white winter robe. He will do iron stomach and breathing exerecises iunder icy water falls, climb cliff faces. Stare down a tiger. Run with wolves, break trees and rivere rocks with his iron fists. Train with the monks of differant temples and defeat their champions. Fight off assasins from defeated fighters. Save a vilage and other things. I need mroe rral life stories form legendary warriors to comple his story.I kind of wnat to keep it in China with only Chinese people, but wnat to take aspects form american, Israeli, Japanese,Thai ancient greek and Indian (India) arts and culture. I think I will put him in a world where there are provinces that resemble these various countries, but all are basically Chinese. No white, no other races. Apparently you haven't read anything about the Shaolin Monks, they would take it as an offense to their honor and would accept challenge in a Sanda or street fight depending on the severity of the insult to the temple and the amount of honor hanging in the balance. And I am not confused with a Japanese temple but the Shaolin Temple in Zheng Zhou in Henan province China. Anyways it's fiction of course. I would ahve to say Imi lichtenfield , Miyamoto Musahsi, and Masutatsu Oyama belong to that list as well. Especially Musashi.
Is there a relationship with kalaripayattu, indian martial arts, shaolin kung fu, and bodhidharma? Some of websites (such as kalaripayattu websites) claim that bodhidharma learned kalaripayattu or some form of martial art from india and then went to china? However, all of the history books that I've read state that Bodhidharma is more legend than fact.... most state the legend that he taught meditative exercises and not actual martial arts.... all the history books seem to state that his association with martial arts is legend... my history professor in Chinese history also states this and further states that most historians believe that his association with Chan/ Zen buddhism is legendalso. However, there are books written by kung fu masters that seem to disagree with them? What's up with that?
What martial arts weapons are illegal in Canada? I currently live in China and travel extensively. I've picked up a few weapons in my travels (display purposes only) and I want to bring my collecton home with me when I move back permanently. I've tried searching online to find out what weapons require permits etc, and which are illegal but I can't find a detailed list. I know nunchaku are illegal, but what about tonfa (like police batons), sai, daggers, sansetsukon, katanna and various other interesting pieces I've picked up? I don't really want to sell ALL of them before I leave. :) Just for clarification, none of the weapons I've collected are guns, antique or otherwise. The only projectiles are the crossbow and a few shurikan I picked up. Any help is greatly appreciated.
This might be odd, but I wondered if anyone has seached for independent martial art teaches in China? I mean off the beaten path...like those who would not have a website, ones that I would have to go and find myself. Looking for tradition in pleading a teacher to take on a student. Anyone else tried/interested in this/done any research in this area? I'm interested, whatever anyone might have. Thanks for the answers. But I'm looking more towards physically going to China and physically studying under a Chinese master. Thank you surely though.
Who is the most supreme martial arts actor, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, or Jet Li? Having been a Bruce fan for years, but aware his films were so-so but the action terrific, then Jackie being a terrific martial artist and some of his early films showed a more serious side to him, I just never thought I would like Jet Li. I never liked hero ,much as I tried, but think, Fearless, Once upon a time in China trilogy and the Tai Chi Master are all superb, especially Fearless. Are there better out there, or could you pick one from these three. Jet was a wushu champion in China I think on 4 occasions, so as a pur martial artist, he would be my favourite. I also think Jet is the best actor of the three. What does anyone else think? Thanks! It's just I recall an interview Bruce did on a Canadian show. He said he would like to be thought of as a great martial arts actor. To my mind he was good, and I agree too he was a pioneer - would there have been Jet or Jackie without Bruce? I just feel Jet Li has matured as an actor and picked some interesting films. That said I think Fist of Fury is Bruce's best by some way.
What do you call the high collar suit that oriental people wear in martial arts/gangsta movies? What do you call the high collar suit that oriental people wear in martial arts/gangsta movies? The suit that has the collar go halfway up the neck and you can't see the shirt or tie. The collar goes up the neck and it tends to be black. I would go to china town to get one, but would prefer finding one on ebay. I want to get one but don't even know what they are called. Anyone know what they are called and where I can buy one?
The best martial arts among all martial arts.? Which is the best martial arts: 1. Kung-fu(china) 2. Aikido(japan) 3. Karate(Japan) 4. Judo(Japan) 5. Taekwondo(Korea) Please don't answer "____ is best for _____years old." These martial arts are the most useful. Please don't add the martial arts that uses weapons. Also, please explain why. I asked this question out of my interest since I have studied most of them and if its by majority....it would be unknown. In my country they say its Taekwondo. In others they say its Kung-fu, Aikido and others.
Too old to learn Chinese martial arts? I'm 17, and a teacher told me that in china they start from the day they can walk, and that I shouldn't waste my time because I will never be as good as the Chinese. Can I catch up in skill? (I'm 17), very athletic. And if I'm not too old, what should I learn? Wushu? Sanshou? Thank you so much for reading and the response.
I want to jog/climb/walk the Great Wall of China. Which is the longest restored section? I'm in my gap year, and I've been hitting martial arts hard. Soon (march-ish) I'm doing 8 weeks Martial Arts training at an Academy in China. While I'm out there I figure I might as well see the wall as well, and it'd be great to come home and boast about jogging the longest length of it possible. Does anyone know what/where the longest section is, and how long it is?
How to get to Japan/China? Ok. So I am planning a trip to go to either China or Japan next summer to study martial arts there and maybe Chinese medecine. Does anybody have any advice on how I could make this happen? Maybe some program that I could go with for some time, and then break off to spend the rest of my tme training. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Well I am planning on doing this before college so I think it rules out teaching. Any other ideas? Thanks for those ideas anyways.
Martial Arts/Academies in Japan? I'm from England, and I'm in my Gap Year. I have 5 months to see the world. I've already done all of Europe, and most of the USA. I've been enthralled with Martial Arts my entire life, but want to take it one step further and practise them in their origin. I've considered Thailand and China, but I would really prefer Japan. Is there any way to intensively study martial arts in Japan as a foreigner that speaks little Japanese? Preferably in an affordable way?
Too late to start chinese martial arts? Hawaii Origin Martial Arts: I want to know about martial arts ethics for my own understanding? My grandfather migrated to Hawaii and to San Francisco with his four brothers in the late 1800s. My family is China's royal family (1644 to 2007). The main unit is composed our four main lineages represented by four brothers selected by the clan (Chin Yin Tong Family Hall). Professor Chow's father was the youngest of the four. If our family and clan is struggling and needed other people's help, would, should Professor Chow's martial arts students and followers help preserve the old traditions and culture of the Professor's? How important is cultural preservation? What kind of dedication should martial arts people render unto the founder of a practice? Should they ignore the man's family, who are the Imperial princes of China, now residing in America, without any sense of Chinese cultural values? When the Imperial family returns to China, it will be absent one lineage. Is this right of martial arts people to do this to China's Imperial family? I would like to find answers. . =============================== Links for getting to know the China's Imperial family, who they are, what they believe in, and their view of Americas: http://www.myspace.com/centerkingdom http://chinatownhawaii.com (links at top) http://www.geocities.com/zhouclan/chia_pu.html =============================== THE CONCERN: As to China's Imperial succession, it is published and known in China as well as in America. The question here is whether martial artist studying under Professor Chow are loyal to the Professor's ideals and family. Do they appreciate what the Professor taught and would they want to better their schools, so that it would reflect the goodness of Professor Chow. THE ANSWER: Perhaps, the reason why some or all of the schools that call themselves Kempo from Professor Chow's MA family tree do not honor the Professor by honoring his family is (1) because they are not familiar with Chinese custom or (2) they have no intention of donating money. By giving, people generally receive more in the end. Greed often blinds us and if martial artist could save China's Emperor's life by being a part of the family by a refusal to do such they are allowing his goodness to die. A case of no gratitude and/or ignorance on the part of many and on the part of the leaders. . My Professor Chow website: http://chinatownhawaii.com/professorchow December 30, 2007 .
Do fans used as weapons appear in any good martial arts films? Chinese and Japanese martial arts use different kinds of fans with different techniques for combat. In The Last Samurai, we briefly see someone practicing with one, and you can find it frequently in anime, but I don't know of any live action films where we see a display of fan combat comparable to what we've seen with other weapons in kung-fu movies. I'm hoping there are some well-done wushu films from China where the fan gets a good action sequence.
What is the name of this martial arts movie? I don't know the actors, but it takes place in China during a war. The main character is monk dressed in white robes with a long ponytail. I think Jet Li is in it, but I know theres a girl named Mung Bean in the film. Mung and her mom scam people by pretending that Mung's mom is dead and begging people for money for her loss. Mung's mom dies from a poison dart while protecting her daughter and many children. That's all I remember. Thanks!
Martial Arts Boarding Academy? In China(or just Asia in general) are there places that you can board at that will focus on martial arts, but still teach regular high school classes and stuff? HELP!
living / learning martial arts abroad for police work? Hi there, I have been saving for quite some time to go to asia and learn martial arts for at least a year. I am posting this on both yahoo answers, travellers point and a martial arts website to get a varied response. I will have enough money to go to any asian country and learn martial arts for at least 1 year. I want to live there and become competent in an art so that i am prepared for police work when i return home. I also want to enjoy myself and have fun. I originally wanted to go to china and learn kung fu, but i know that this would probably be quite an unsociable environment considering i like to travel, play guitar and perform poi etc. In other words i want to go somewhere that i can meet other fun young people. I would not be able to teach english or work in the schools i have found in china though which would suggest quite an antisocial lifestyle and no means of making money. Then i thought about going to the Phillipines and learning Eskrima. This is quite popular with me as i have always wanted to go to the phillipines and i love the idea of living on a selection of islands with beaches nearby. I could teach english there (although not make much money) and i think it would be quite socialble with travellers coming and going. The down side to this is that eskrima is not necessarily an art that i am very keen on or feel i could put to use in policing. Then another idea is to go to Thailand and learn muay thai. I have travelled around Thailand before and know from experience that the Thai people are amazing and that there is a large amount of young travellers that id get to know. I also know of training centres on the beaches and islands (which i would like to travel around) and would really really like to teach english to children. I could do all this here and it is probably the cheapest option as well. The biggest problem is that the art isnt really defensive at all and therefore wouldnt really benefit me with my future career. I am basically asking advise from anyone who has an opinion to help me out. Any suggestions are welcome and any feedback whatsoever is greatly appreciated. My main criteria is - learn a defensive martial art for use in a future role in the Police - to have a good social life as i will be there a year, with other young people (and maybe some attractive young ladies) - to teach english to children as i love children and think id really enjoy it - live not too far from civilization.... i want to travel while im out there and do a tour of south east asia when i finish Thankyou very much Nick

What should I know about Chinese martial arts to pick it up? My girlfriend's dad offered to give me free of charge, specialized training in Chinese martial arts ('I want my daughter to be protected'). However he did add that his method of training is traditional and 'I will not be going easy on you'. I'm keen to take his offer, but are there any basics I need to know about martial arts so I won't be too sorely humiliated?
Is it true that the original bare knuckle English boxing influnced Chinese martial arts? This link here states that classical English puglism influnced Wing Chun and other Chinese martial arts. http://redrebelmartialarts.blogspot.com/2007/07/how-to-train-with-adam.html Some other websites even stated that backfists and hammerfists were introduced to Wing Chun and other Chinese martial arts from classical English bare knuckle fist fighting. Where can I find a teacher and Sifu of Chinese martial arts and or Tai Chi in Laredo, Texas? I am new to the area (Zapata/Laredo/Rio Grande City) and very interestedd in studying Chinese martial arts. A few years ago, I used to study Tai Chi and some Kung Fu forms with Sifu Art Cason in Tennessee, who was part of the Chinese Boxing Institute Does anyone know any Kung Fu or internal arts Sifus in this area? RSVP Greg PO BOX 15125 Zapata, TX 78076 512-484-3539
Is this the true tradition form of training in Chinese martial arts? One school I've found claims that it uses no grading system, no belts (which I find sensible, most schools over-emphasis belts), and no sparing at all. The head instructor also claimed he thought Bruce Lee was merely an actor and didn't train in any real martial art, merely a watered down form. Does this sound like a McDojo? Thanks
Do traditional Chinese martial arts use belts to denote rank? As far as I know, Chinese kung fu does not use colored belts to mark ranks, only Japanese arts like Karate or Judo. But why do some modern schools claiming to teach kung fu use belts and even keikogi's (karate uniform)? Is it because the wider Western public is familiar with this system? Is it simply easier and more convenient to have belts to denote rank than to not? Could someone please explain this for me. I apologize if someone else has already asked this question.
Chinese Martial Arts jumping? In some of the Chinese Martial Arts films I have seen I see people jumping atleast 20 feet or about 10 feet straight up, I don't know if this could really be done, but if it could I would like to learn how. Can anyone help me?
Can soft chinese martial arts be practiced with hard M.A ? Some principles in chinese martial arts require that you not be tense but relax and soft....e.g. Taichi, wingchun... My question is can you practice those martial arts with a hard martial art like e.g. karate or muay thai ... will they conflict with each other? please only answer if you know. cus they focus on the one principle is that the harder you try the worst it gets ...you MUST relax your muscles and body first...then doesn't it contradicts with the principle in hard martial arts lets say " muay thai" ohhh better example would be "nanquan" in wushu for example..where you're supposed to be rock solid to produce that explosive force... so doesn't the 2 principles just cancels out each other instead of supplementing each other ? i can't seem to grasp this concept... it's not making sense in my mind. blutowsky: pls elaborate your explaination bit more...
What is (in your opinion) the most effective *Chinese* martial Art for self defense? I am interested in chinese martial arts, like all the different kinds of Kung Fu, and I was wondering, if you have any experience, what is the most effective chinese martial art for self defense? Do you think Shaolin is the best? I've heard some people say Tai Chi is best in the long run, or that Wing Chun is best, etc...What is your opinion?
Deadly Chinese Martial Arts? I don't know how to call this type of martial arts in English, anyway I wonder if anyone have information about this Chinese martial arts which uses weakness of human body.. Who was the chinese martial arts character in The Matrix? I can't remember which one, it must have been reloaded because the guy was like the guard for the oracle. He was some kung fu asian guy that said he had to see if Neo was ready. I just want to know his character name and his real name, and a picture if possible.
Wushu; Chinese Martial Arts? I used to learn wushu but about quitted a year ago, due to stress and family problems. Now I want to pick it up again. If I pick it up again, should I start from the basics or should I continue from where I left? Thanks!
Did Chinese soilders learn martial arts like Samurai did? If not, then how did they learn to use weapons in combat? The way i see it, Samurai were required to learn each weapons martial art and Jujitsu for had-to-hand, just like Shaolin Monks and Ninja, (Disregaurd that they're from different countries.). So what did Chinese cavalry learn? Kung-Fu teaches everything together.
do you involve martial arts with religion? many chinese martial arts are either taoist or buddhist. as a christian for example do you think it has any affect on your religous views. thank u saint g i did reaserch on adrenaline and found it very intresting thank you
Can anyone help me remember this Chinese Martial Art Movie? I remember, as a child, watching this fantastic Martial Arts movie. I think it was a Wong Fei-Hung and I think Jet-Li was the actor. I'm pretty sure it's not one of the "Once Upon A Time In China" movies. The plot is somewhat like this: --I think some guy challenged the main character. --They fight by doing a Chinese dragon dance. --While the main character used a dragon costume the other guy used a centipede like one with razor sharp knives on the edge. --I think the main character wins but the guy challenged him again. However, this time the guy fights dirty by drugging the main character and causing him to go deaf. --The main character late recovers his hearing with the help of a man and his daughter I believe. --The main character challenges the centipede guy but this time instead of using a Dragon he dresses as a chicken. If someone can give me the title or a link of where I can purchase this movie it'll be great.
martial arts punching and headaches? I have been training in a Chinese martial arts which is very external. (its a derivative form of Shaolin) The drills require repetitive training of one motion, most often a type of punch technique. My teacher insists I train with punching hard to develop power. I noticed my punching power has considerably strengthened, however, I also am now often getting headaches after training. (I train for 30-60 min. per day, usually doing 20 minutes of hard punches, about 10 different techniques in all, then I do a set of long Tai Chi which takes 30 minutes) The headaches stem around my neck area/shoulder. Has anyone else had this? Anyway to alleviate this, while still continuing to train power? Any thoughts from practicioners appreciated. (I think all boxing type arts may experience this) Thank you I am young (29 years old), and in full health. No heart/blood problems I know of.

What is a good Chinese martial art for a small female? I am pretty athletic female, but I am relatively small (4'10", 90 lbs, 25). I am interested in learning a martial art - as a hobby, another form of exercise. For my size, I am pretty strong (I can bench more than my own weight, leg press double my weight - which granted isn't vary much hehe). I am interested in a Chinese martial art because I would love to learn taught in the original language (I am nearly fluent in Mandarin). What would be an appropriate type of martial art for someone like me to study? I live in LA, so I could probably find any type in the Chinese neighborhoods. Oh, I am not Chinese. I am caucasian, but I speak Mandarin as well.
